Comment: This is an officially prepared list of casualties in the Iraqi war. Unofficial sources, to include mortuary personnel at Dover AFB, German personnel at Rammstein AFB in Germany, and several religious organizations in the United States and Germany would indicate that the actual number of dead at slightly less than 500 and the wounded and critically injured at about 1,489, most of who were either treated at US military triage units in the combat areas and released or sent to rear area hospitals, especially in Germany, for more extensive treatment.

There is no record of live and injured official military personnel being sent to any US continental medical facility. Statements of civilian personnel in the vicinity of Dover AFB indicate that any photographing of military cargo aircraft bearing dead personnel, either on the base itself or from any vantage point on the base perimeter but outside military jurisdiction is strictly prohibited. Also prohibited are debarking ceremonies with flag-draped coffins and military honor guards.

The President has ordered that remains of deceased military personnel will be turned directly over to civilian funeral establishments without any ceremony “as a matter of respect” for the families of the deceased but obviously intended to prevent any possible American media release of figures of the dead.

These actions appear to be more designed to prevent any knowledge by the American public of heavier losses than those indicated in official reports.
